"in quiet verse"
the inaugural piece for this blog π
your lyrics glide across my tongue
while melody calls god above
till sweet release and cadence come
crescendo in our rhyme
in search of breath, our fingers lace,
each digit locked in sweet embrace;
in syncopated rhythm plays
my thumb on yours in time
a quip begets guffaw and wheeze,
staccatoed sniffling our reprieve
from seagull-wailing 'neath the eaves -
our screech at the divine
with heartbeats quelled by hips entwined
and breath that sings in moonlit time,
our rhyme's the reason we survive
and thrive in quiet verse
background
this piece is about the quiet, intimate moments people share with each other after something climactic which, in this poem's case, happens to be sex. sure, we have fiery, intense moments. but between those moments are gentle, subtle, and whispering moments that remind us of our connection with each other. catching your breath together and communicating through touch when you can't get to words. the pillow talk and laughing together just in time to lose control of your breath after you've just gotten it back. and, of course, the tranquility of breath harmonized when we're at our most vulnerable together. big, grand moments are chock full of big, grand emotions. but the small, quiet moments that underscore our lives are what really gives it some color π
calligraphy practice

the whole poem is really built around part of the featured quote:
our rhyme's the reason we survive
so i wanted to do some calligraphy practice with that. it's super early in my practice, so i chose to use uncial, which is a pretty old hand and it's relatively straightforward with no frills or fuss. i think of it as the "lord of the rings" script, honestly. i might come back to this quote when i've learned some more and make a piece where the hand matches the tone of the poem a little more. but hey, it's early on and that's okay.
it's the first time i actually did something you could consider a calligraphy piece so my hand was a little shaky, which you can probably see in a couple spots where the lines aren't super neat. i'm proud of it though! we all start somewhere and i think i did a pretty good job for a first shot. eventually, i'll get to a point where i erase the guidelines, but i was honestly terrified i'd smear the ink. i'm still learning about different inks and papers and how they interact, so i didn't want to risk anything. it took me like 20+ minutes to do this one and i didn't want to have to redo it π
if you're wondering, the pen i used is the 2.4mm pilot parallel which is a great starting pen for broad-edge calligraphy. highly recommended on the r/Calligraphy subreddit, so naturally i went with it. if you want to get one, you can find them here. this isn't a sponsored or affiliate thing, just an info thing βΊοΈ
